Why StressTest.pro

A backtest can give you a number. We want it to give you understanding.

StressTest.pro is built for self-directed investors who want to understand the trade-offs behind a portfolio — not just see whether the line went up.

The problem

Most portfolio tools stop when the calculation finishes.

A growth chart. A CAGR. A Sharpe ratio. A drawdown table. Maybe twenty more metrics.

The harder questions start after those numbers appear.

  • Was the return worth the risk?
  • How bad did the portfolio get along the way?
  • How long did recovery take?
  • Did one position drive most of the outcome?
  • Would a different starting period tell a different story?
  • And which assumptions changed the result?

More output is not the same as more understanding.

What we're trying to do

Make the result easier to reason about.

StressTest.pro is being built around the moment after the calculation finishes.

We want the analysis to answer questions in roughly the same order an investor would naturally ask them:

  1. What happened?
  2. What did I have to endure to get there?
  3. How did it compare?
  4. Where did the risk come from?
  5. Which assumptions shaped the result?
  6. What changes when I test another allocation?
  1. OutcomeWhat happened?
  2. RiskWhat did it take?
  3. DiversificationWhere did risk come from?
  4. ContextCompared with what?
  5. Deeper analysisWhen you want more.

A simple rule

Risk belongs next to return.

A high return does not erase a deep drawdown.

A strong ending value does not tell you how long the portfolio spent underwater.

One good historical period does not tell you whether the same allocation would have felt acceptable from another starting date.

And a simulated range of future outcomes is not a forecast.

So whenever we can, StressTest puts the trade-off beside the result instead of making you hunt for it somewhere else.

What this isn't

The past is evidence. It isn't a recommendation.

Backtests are historical.
Simulations are hypothetical.
Neither tells you what to buy.

A portfolio that worked well in one period may behave differently in another. A model is only as useful as its assumptions, inputs and interpretation.

StressTest.pro is an analysis and educational tool. The goal is not to turn history into a prediction. The goal is to make the trade-offs difficult to miss.

Who it's for

For investors who choose their own portfolio — and want to understand it better.

StressTest.pro is primarily built for self-directed investors who are past the very beginning, but who do not have a professional quant desk behind them.

You may already know what an ETF is.
You may already have an allocation.
You may already know that CAGR alone is not enough.

What you want is a clearer way to examine:

  • drawdowns
  • recovery
  • concentration
  • risk-adjusted performance
  • benchmark trade-offs
  • different starting periods
  • possible future ranges

Show the assumptions

A result without its assumptions is easy to misread.

Date range, rebalancing, contributions, benchmark selection, dividend treatment and inflation adjustment can materially change how a backtest looks.

StressTest keeps those assumptions visible alongside the analysis so the result can be understood in context.

What we're protecting

Clarity over quantity.

As StressTest grows, it will become capable of calculating more.

That does not mean the first screen should show more.

The product should continue to reveal complexity when it helps, hide it when it doesn't, and make the important trade-offs understandable before asking the user to inspect the advanced statistics.

Still learning

We're still deciding what deserves to be front and center.

Different investors care about different things.

Some look at maximum drawdown first.
Some care about rolling periods.
Some want benchmark comparisons.
Others care most about concentration or retirement outcomes.

We're building StressTest with that tension in mind — keeping the first result simple while making deeper analysis available when you want it.
